Systemic Disease

- Anorexia (783.0), Loss of weight (783.21), and Adult failure to thrive (783.7) are non-specific and do not have risk values.

- Weight loss requiring nutritional supplements is often seen in individuals with chronic disease such as: malignancy, CHF, or COPD. Protein calorie malnutrition of mild degree (263.1) is defined as tissue wasting from inadequate intake of nutrients or as a complication of chronic disease.

- Cachexia (799.4) may be an alternative diagnosis and is defined as general ill health or poor nutrition and often occurs with malignancies of the lung, pancreas, stomach, bowel, or prostate or in individuals with COPD or CHF.

Back pain from a non-traumatic compression fracture often leads to a diagnosis of Osteoporosis (733.00) and a Pathologic fracture of the vertebra (733.13) having a risk value.
